Ukrainian wine, hanging in the balance

Decanter publishes an in-depth article on the impact of the Russian invasion on Ukraine’s wine industry in the first months of the war. Beykush general manager Svitlana Tsybak revealed that while the winery suffered no direct damage, a woman pruning vines in a neighbouring vineyard was killed by Russian artillery. The piece traces Ukrainian winemaking history from the Crimean peninsula to today’s craft producers and details the industry’s challenges: a ban on alcohol sales, the destruction of Goodwine’s warehouse by missiles, and glass supply problems caused by damage to the Vetropack factory in Hostomel. Beykush is cited as an example of a small-scale project in Mykolaiv region, founded in 2010 with an initial 11 hectares of vines on the bank of the Berezani estuary.
